Being a kid, there is no greater joy in the world than waking up on a school morning to a foot of fresh snow on the ground. To a parent, there is no greater aggravation, unless your occupation is as a plow driver or professional skier. For the majority of us, however, snow means shoveling, salting, scraping, and plenty of headaches on the road. On top of that, failing to shovel could lead to some serious consequences.
Many local municipalities have enacted laws that require property owners and/or residents to remove snow and ice from sidewalks within certain periods of time. Below are a few local codes requiring property owners or occupants to remove snow:
- Albany requires property owners or occupants to remove snow and ice within 24 hours following the end of a snowstorm. Albany City Code § 323-21 – Snow and ice removal from sidewalks and streets.
