Thanksgiving Eve, often called “Blackout Wednesday,” remains one of the most dangerous nights of the year for drivers. Known as the #1 drinking night, this evening sees a surge in social gatherings, often involving alcohol, leading to a higher risk of impaired driving incidents. With winter weather frequently in the forecast, Thanksgiving Eve is particularly hazardous, and law enforcement agencies across New York will be stepping up DWI patrols and checkpoints to prevent accidents.
If you are going out the night before Thanksgiving, make sure you have a designated driver, or the number for a cab company in your phone, or the lyft or uber app on your phone. If you are not going out this year, offer to pick up friends who are.
What Are the Latest Statistics on Thanksgiving Eve DWI Accidents?
From 2018 to 2022, there were 833 fatalities in traffic crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle rider who was drunk during the Thanksgiving holiday (6 p.m. Wednesday–5:59 a.m. Monday). In 2022 alone, there were 184 fatalities in such crashes. Notably, drivers aged 21-34 accounted for 32% of alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday in 2022.
Expect More DWI Checkpoints
During holiday seasons, including Thanksgiving, New York’s STOP-DWI Program (Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated) ramps up enforcement efforts to prevent impaired driving. This program includes additional patrols, sobriety checkpoints, and awareness campaigns that remind drivers of the dangers and consequences of driving under the influence.
