In late September, George and Andy traveled to Washington, Missouri to complete a DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Program, a 24-hour program administered over the course of three days by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA).
This course was developed by the US Department of Transportation and approved by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) to provide education and consistency in the content, delivery and application of DWI training. Nationwide there is only one course administered that meets the standards of both the NHTSA and the IACP; this is the one course.
This rigorous three-day training is ordinarily administered to law enforcement officers and teaches a variety of skills, including:
- How to recognize behavior that points toward impaired driving;
- Effective questioning techniques and how to handle challenging situations;
- How to properly administer Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST) under ideal conditions;
- When and how to make an impaired driving arrest;
- How to write accurate and detailed reports;
- How to give clear and convincing testimony.
The ultimate goal of this course and many others like it is to increase deterrence of DWI violations and reduce the number of injuries caused by impaired drivers.
Through the use of classroom sessions and hands-on workshops, George and Andy were educated by some of the best instructors in the nation on Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and the most up to date education and proper techniques for administering these tests.
At the conclusion of the weekend, both George and Andy received their certifications by the NHTSA.
